Racist Cartoon Infers Barack Obama is a Monkey

Villagers, did you see this cartoon in the New York Post today? It appears that this cartoonist (Sean Delonas) and the New York Post haven't gotten the word about America being in a 'post-racial' era. This cartoonist thought that there was humor in using the recent police shooting of a monkey juxtaposed against the historic work of President Barack Obama in signing stimulus legislation.

The Electronic Village joins with Al Sharpton in demanding that The Post publically clarify what point they were trying to make in this cartoon, and reprimand their cartoonist for making inferences that are offensive and divisive at a time the nation struggles to come together to stabilize the economy if, in fact, this was yet another racially charged cartoon.

The cartoon isn't funny. It is racist and inflammatory and it has no place in a newspaper. That's my view. It is what I plan to tell the New York Post editor, Col Allen -- col.allan@nypost.com. What say u?

Hey Villager.

You know normally I'm one who tries not to jump too quick to say something is racist or racially insensitive because I think sometimes we're just too quick on the draw with that. But in this case? New York Post needs to get called out Big Time on this one. They really, really screwed up and they need to hear about it loud and clear.

Since I'm not one of those folks walking around thinking that racism has ended because Obama was elected president, this doesn't surprise me at all. I just hope that people make a big enough fuss about this so that these types of things cease! Gotta keep shining light on stuff like this!

I agree it is not funny, more over the political satire is irrelevant. The 2 situations just don't relate.

Plus, just a little science here.
The incident of the shooting of the animal was a Chimpanzee. Chimpanzees are Apes, not monkeys. Monkeys and Apes are both primates. The best way to tell the difference - monkeys have tails, Apes do not. And the shooting of the chimp was unfortunate and sad. I hope it was lesson for anyone who thinks that having a wild (non-domesticated) species of animal as pet is just a a VERY BAD idea.

Keith - I wonder if the brothers and sisters who subscribe to the New York Post will cancel their subscription? I wonder if the advertisers who fund the New York Post will cancel their advertising accounts?

Beautiful Curare - I feel ya' sista. Did you see where Eric Holder called us a 'nation of cowards' when it comes to race relations?

Danielle - Thanx for droppin' science on us! I heard the 911 calls about the chimp rampage ... it was chilling to listen to the lady on the phone.

Wander - Huh?

I was completely blown when I saw that racist BS, and it's insulting for the NYP to deny the inference was racist and inflammatory.

Chris - I think that the New York Post is slowly getting the idea that they made a mistake by publishing this racist cartoon...
