Drumbeats from Retabile tell us about St. Thomas University decision to ban Desmond Tutu from speaking on their campus. It turns out that having an enemy of the state speak on a college campus is easier than getting permission for a Nobel Laureate who was instrumental in ending apartheid in South Africa. C'mon St. Thomas University ... where is the love?I thought that the decision to cancel Desmond Tutu from speaking on campus was simply a misguided birthday present of some sort. Today (October 7) is Desmond Tutu's birthday. But, it appears that the university officials were concerned that Jewish contributors might be offended by having a Nobel Laureate on their rooty-poot campus. Can you believe it? Who knew that Jewish power brokers held such power in Minnesota. I wouldn't be surprised if these same jerks at St. Thomas University aren't found regularly in Larry Craig's stall at the Minnesota airport.
I hope that some other major university will seize upon the opportunity to invite Desmond Tutu to speak on their campus since St. Thomas is too afraid of the dark to do so. Villagers, any thoughts you care to share on this issue?

ReplyDeleteA couple of things: First, I wish Bishop Tutu a joyous and happy birthday. Second, I wouldn't disparage the entire state of Minnesota because of the actions of one small, elitist University. A school right down the street, Macalester College (incidentally, another small, elitist school) tried to secure the Bishop when it learned of St. Thomas' foolish, regrettable rebuke.
ACT - You are probably right about fact that I shouldn't have blamed the whole state. It just made for a better title (smile). Minnesota is having a spate of bad publicity with the bridge, airport bathroom and Tutu insult. I'm glad to see you and others (from the state?) who agree that St. Thomas was foolish. Do you think that St. Thomas realizes the mistake that they made?

Rosemarie - The idea that Bishop Desmond Tutu is compared to the current Iran president ... and comes out a loser in the world of college academics ... does anger me. I appreciate your gentle reminder that my words may have been harsh.

So his crime is not kissing Jewish ass, and being critical of a nation, not evening the nation he's coming to.

Someone criticize a nation that they're not even citizens of, and on their say he's disallowed to speak at a university, and a christian based one at that though he's christian clergy.

Bishop Tutu has to be one of the least threatening people in history. This is nonsense.
