Manic Monday: Wish

I Wish

Looking back on when I
Was a little nappy headed boy
Then my only worry
Was for christmas what would be my toy
Even though we sometimes
Would not get a thing
We were happy with the
Joy the day would bring

Sneaking out the back door
To hang out with those hoodlum friends of mine
Greeted at the back door
With boy thought I told you not to go outside,
Tryin’ your best to bring the
Water to your eyes
Thinkin’ it might stop her
From woopin’ your behind

I wish those days could come back once more
Why did those days ev-er have to go
I wish those days could come back once more
Why did those days ev-er have to go
Cause I love them so

Click here for to see the lyrics of 'I Wish' in writing. Stevie Wonder was the man back in the day. For that matter I recall times when Prince and Michael Jackson were at the top of the charts every week. I'm getting old (sigh)... however maybe some of y'all can help me out. What do you recall about your youth? What do you wish you could listen to or visit or do again in 2008 that simply ain't available to listen to or do any longer?

  4. i wish that one hot summer day an ice cream truck with the little bell and carousel music would roll through my subdivision... and then all the little kids would run from our neighborhood pool to go grab up some sugar-laden cold & frosty treats!

  6. This is long, but your song reminded me of another one with the same theme:

    Candle climb Upward
    Tallow Return
    Lengthen Burned Wick
    Do Me This Trick
    Unburn, unburn, unburn

    Make me a child again
    Just for today
    Foolish and Wild again
    Just for today
    Make me unwise again
    Teach me surprise again
    See through young eyes again
    Just for today

    Wisdom desert me
    Folly Return
    Brain of my Youth
    Wrinkled by Truth
    unlearn unlearn unlearn

    Children who cared for me
    Come out and play
    Don't hide in Memory
    Just for today
    Kitten be found again
    I'll chase you round again
    Free and unbound again
    Just for today

    All that is beautiful
    Bring back once more
    Leave all that is dutiful
    Outside my door

    Candle climb Upward
    Tallow Return
    Lengthen Burned Wick
    Do Me This Trick
    Unburn, unburn, unburn

  7. Sandee and Tegdirb92 - Asante sana!

Ms. Marvalus - New Edition was quite the bomb back in the day. Sad how Bobby Brown turned out.

plez - The ice cream man. I seem to recall that Eddie Murphy had a riff on the ice cream man in his stand-up comedy act back in the day as well...

...Flying Monkeys - I'll be by to visit shortly.

Jamie - Wow. That is a great poem. It reminds me of a Twilight Zone episode that starred Scatman Caruthers. It was set in an old folks home. The old folks would play kick the can and be transported in their memories back to their youth...

  9. BHC - I recall that you were having some writer's block issues earlier. Are you back in the game? Have you considered doing Manic Monday or Wordless Wednesday meme as a way to get back in the flow?

  10. Good morning Villager! I'm back (I think!) I moved to a new blog, and I'm feeling a little more inspired. I think I needed a change of scenery.

    Stop by some time: http://bohemianabstractions.wordpress.com

    Bless!

  12. Villager, you got me up and dancing in the early morning...Yeah Stevie!

What do I remember about my youth? The best thing was listening to Johnny Mathis, believe it or not! I know every word of his songs "Chances Are" "The Twelfth of Never" all his Christmas Songs. He was soooo romantic!

  13. Villager, thanks for updating the blogroll for me. Do you have any tricks for getting it to show up on wordpress?

Unfortunately, I can only show a small portion of the blogroll (10 blogs) in the sidebar because wordpress doesn't allow any HTML.

Glad you like the new blog!

  14. Teach - I'm glad that your monday morning got started with a pleasant beat! I do recall Johnny Mathis although he was a little before my time (smile). Have a great week!

BHC - I don't know answer to your question. I'll pose it to the kinfolk to see if we can find an answer for you.

  15. What do you recall about your youth?

Being poor, and being okay with it.

  16. Villager, no need...I figured it out. Thanks! :)

  17. BBC - That memory ('being poor') remains with many of us today ... in fact, it is reality for too many of us today. That is a good wish for our futures... more duckets in our pockets!

  18. Whenever my brother and sister and I were wreaking havoc on the house and my dad saw my mom getting that look of "I'm going to kill the children" in her eyes, he would hustle us into the car and take us to work with him. My dad worked in downtown Los Angeles, which used to be incredible, and he would just take us from store to store buying us all kinds of goodies. I'll never forget that. He was truly a treasure.

  19. Very moving.
Yes, we're getting old, aren't we?
I remember when Michael Jackson had a nose, too!
Thanks for sharing this with us, and for participating in Manic Mondays!
    cheers,
    Manic Mo

  20. Shelia - Oddly enough, the work places for my parents was a mystery. My mom was a teacher for 35 years and my Dad was an aeronautical engineer for over 30 years. I don't recall ever going to his office. I did spend a year (2nd grade as I recall) at the same school that my mom taught ... but, I don't think I went with her to her school after that much, if at all.

Did you take your kids with you to work to continue the family tradition?

  21. Yes I did Villager!

My husband's schedule has always been crazy and so has mine, and as a young administrator with the City I worked a lot of evenings trying to get up to speed, so I would pick my infant daughter up from the babysitter and bring her right back to the office.

Once she started walking, my husband, a college professor, would take her to class with him where she caused great disruption because the students spent more time playing with her than paying attention to him! She loved it!

By the time my son was born I had my own business so I just took him to the office with me everyday until he went to school.

  22. Shelia - You inspire me to take my children with me to the office in the coming days. Thank you for sharing your story/memory of the past...

  23. This is definitely my childhood anthem. I always reminisce when I hear this one.

Hey plez, I'll race you to the ice cream truck!
(Man, how do we get those guys to come out to the burbs?)

  24. Martin - Have you considered adding this Manic Monday meme to your blog?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yeah I have actually. Refresh me on the process. Do I pick my own word and let people run with it or do I copy yours and refer back to you as the creator of the meme?
