Will Colin Powell Endorse Barack Obama?

It was interesting to read recent Colin Powell interview in which he praises Barack Obama for his speech on race relations. Powell provided advice and counsel to Obama earlier in the campaign. However, retired Gen. Colin Powell insists he hasn't yet decided who he'll back in the 2008 presidential election.

"I'm looking at all three candidates," Powell said in an exclusive interview with Diane Sawyer for Thursday's "Good Morning America" on ABC. "I know them all very, very well. I consider myself a friend of each and every one of them. And I have not decided who I will vote for yet."

Villagers, I like Colin Powell. He phuqued his legacy up bigtime when he carried the water for the Bush administration to the United Nations in the build-up for the Iraq War. He misled and lied to the international community as well as to the American people. It was a shameful act ... and Colin Powell expressed regret for his role in that UN testimony after the fact.

All that being said, I still like Colin Powell. In fact, I remember when he retired from the military and nobody knew whether he was going to participate in politics as a democrat or republican. I hoped he would run for president as a democrat. Do y'all remember those days?

  1. I strongly believe that Colin Powell was misled himself. The strategy for attacking Iraq had been in the coffers for years.

I finally got to my April 13th In Solidarity: Global Day for Darfur link list with 5 actions sponsored by Dream for Darfur.

I listened to the NPR radio interview you did the other day. I told my hub that I am friends with a rockstar!

  2. Villager, I'm with you. I like Colin Powell, too! Yeah, he messed up - but, the fact that he "got out of Dodge" was very telling regarding his feelings about the whole Iraq-thing and is fool of a boss.

I saw the interview this morning, too and thought the fact that he didn't "endorse" anyone was also very telling. He's a moderate Republican and he's not decided to endorse McCain...hmmmm? He's not decided to endorse Clinton - but as a reminder, he "opted" not to serve under Bill as SoS...hmmm? And then there's Barack...He obviously likes him - thinks he's a great organizer - and kind of said that "as long as he surrounds himself with good people..." Well to me that sounded like Powell's at least leaning in that direction - otherwise, he'd be (in my estimation) campaigning for McCain. SjP

  3. Danielle - It is a shame that Colin Powell allowed himself to be duped. His career was unlimited without that major blemish. Anyhow, I look forward to support the Darfur blogblast this weekend...

Sojourer - Congrats on being admitted into The AfroSpear! Also, I agree with you about Colin's comments on McCain and Obama ... it was a blow to McCain and a major positive boom for Obama... I wonder if Powell would consider being Secretary of Defense for Obama?

  4. I'm watching this now on MSNBC, and I don't know if it's an endorsement, but I do know I gained respect for Colin Powell for standing up against the Bush/Cheney machine. I now see him as an honest person, who didn't run as VP because he refused to be used or to get in the gutter to win. I gained appreciation for him and after the kind words he had for Jeremiah Wright, I think I may now admire him.

  5. Villager - I'm overjoyed about being admitted into the Afrospere! Being accepted was a real right of passage for me akin to "crossing sands" or "riding the goat" for those who can relate! I've been remissed for not saying thank you until now...please forgive, but time has simply been getting away from me lately. I'm feel very honored and more importantly - deeply humbled with being admitted.

I'm wondering the same thing about Obama and Powell with respect to SoD. Things are certainly going to be very interesting... SjP

  6. Mrs. Grapevine - My recollection is that a major reason for Powell's decision to stay out of elective politics was the health condition of his wife. Do you remember those stories as well?

  7. I don't know if he will vote for Obama. He has always been a "closet" democrat(just my feeling). He was used and of course he now recognizes that.

I can only hope he follows his heart and vote for the one he feels will give this country a new growth opportunity.

Which of course is OBAMA.. :-)

  8. Iriegal - I hope he does more than vote for Obama. I hope he grows a set and publically endorses him as well...

  9. I used to respect Powell a great deal until he put on his blinders and played the whore for Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld.

  10. Gunfighter - I guess he now wants to be a Mary Magdeline kinda whore now...

  11. If he endorses Obama, Colin Powell needs to get a grip on life like the rest of the "Messiah's" followers. Obama is ranting "Change for America" but if elected, it will be change for the worse. The man lacks experience and I don't believe a word that comes out of his mouth. Sounds likes this blog is a bunch of Dems.

  12. Terry - 'Change for the worse'?

How can things be worse than a 25% drop in the stock market? How can things be worse than the $4/gallon gas we just had this past summer? How can things be worse than fighting in two wars at the same time? How can things be worse than unemployment at the highest levels in the past six years ... and higher still in the Black community? How can things be worse than seeing presidential candidates hung in effigy in the front yards of our citizens?

It seems to me that Colin Powell is looking at the totality of his 71 years as an American hero and I hope that he chooses a candidate to endorse that he can believe in ... unlike what he did when he duped the world into believing that Sadaam had weapons of mass destruction...
