Disney's First Black Princess Coming to a Theatre Near You

We told you last year about Maddy ... the first Black princess in the Disney ensemble. We're closer to 2009 grand opening of this animated story involving voodoo, frogs and our heroine princess. In fact, a teaser is now available for your review:

  2. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I wrote an article on this from the perspective that it was promoting stereotypes. The original black princess' name was Maddy (with voodoo ties), a throwback to Mammy, as some have said. It was reworked by Disney and there are still many who are ticked off about it. We'll see what happens.

  3. Honestly, I was cool with the teaser up until that firefly showed up, I thought it was cute (too coonish/stereotypically dumb Cajun for me).

Even though this is Disney's first Black princess, they have had other multicultural princesses (Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan).

How have they treated the culture around those princesses and do we expect them to do right by the Black (history and) culture?

  6. RDawg - no doubt, however, do we need to put it in the face of our youngsters in 21st century?

    Janet - Should be interesting...

Tayo - Mulan is my favorite Disney princess...

Rei - Thank you for the invitation. I will come by shortly...

Don - I hope that it turns out positive as well...

  7. I stopped doing Disney a long time ago! I have some very strong feelings about the story lines that are featured in many of their popular films.

I do not like frogs so I am not mad at girlfriend if she doesn't want to kiss that lil' sucker on the lips.

I have a little princess of my own who will let me know if the film is good or not.

Since I do not have to endure it at all, I will take her word for it.

  8. I heard Disney's black princess one ages ago but, because I hadn't heard much further, I assumed they'd shelved the project. Thanks for posting the teaser!

I'm typically not a fan of Disney (or kids movies in general), but it will be interesting to see how this one plays out!
