Old School Friday: Luther Vandross

Mrs. Grapevine is co-founder of the Old School Friday meme. She informed us that the theme this week is 'Favorite Male Singers'. I thought about Frankie Beverly, Rick James and Michael Franks. However, as they say ... 'there can only be one' ... and my choice is the late, great Luther Vandross.

I first heard Luther when he was with a group called 'Change' and they put out a song called 'The Glow of Love'. I remember memorizing the words to that song and using them as a poem for my fiancee.

I saw Luther live in concert while in college. It always amazed me how his live concet appearances sounded just like the recorded tracks on his albums. The man was a musical genius.

  1. No doubt about it, Villager. If you want to discuss best vocalists of all time, you GOT to come through Luther.

  8. When Janet Jackson's son "All For You," came out I could not remember for the life of me where the sample came from. I was in college and surrounded by people had no idea, either. Not only Luther passed away did I figure it all out. Great pick!

  9. I believe that Luther is considered by many to be the best male singer of all time and there is no doubt that his vocal and writing skills earned him such a title. Long live Luther Vandross.

  10. Real nice. I'm telling you all this crooning has me swooning. Puts me in the mood for the hub's return Tuesday.

    It's been far too long.

I saw your response to my comment on the most recent roundtable. Since you have me reaching, my brother. Email me with the specifics and I'll definitely consider it. The NPR station here is at my college.

    Have a Blessed Weekend.

Light and Love all the day Long.

  12. Luther will always be a favorite for so many of us. Still hard to believe that such a great talent has passed from our midst. I chose my favorite, Frankie Beverly. Hope you get a chance to stop by.
