Old School Friday: Ready for the World
Mrs. Grapevine established 'One-Hit Wonders' as the theme for this week's Old School Friday meme. There were a couple of groups that came to mind for me, including Force MDs, The Jones Girls, Anita Ward and even the Sugar Hill Gang.
However, at the end of the day I settled on Ready for the World. They had a #1 hit called, 'Oh Sheila' ... a song originally written by Prince to honor Sheila E.

Good pick! But the Jones Girls are definitely not one hit wonders. "You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else", "Nights Over Egypt" and "I'm At Your Mercy" come to mind. Back to Ready For The World...They are from my hometown and I remember when they were riding high on the success of "Oh Sheila. This song takes me back to the Big 80's.
ReplyDeleteGotta love some Ready for The World and this is one of my faves from them. I agree with pjazzy that Oh Sheila definitely constitutes another hit for them. That is STILL my jam. Whew! Pjazzy gonna make me go get my Jones Girls on too. Nights Over Egypt and You Gonna...!!!!

Oh my feelings are hurt, I love this group, I can't believe you called them a one-hit wonder. What about Slide Over, Can't He Do Like This-That, Girl Tonight, Love You Down, and Gently.

They had lots of songs I like and still listen to, but I don't know if they really charted well so maybe they are one hit wonders. Hmm... I'm on the fence. Nice choice.
ReplyDelete"Oh Sheila" is a cool song, but RFTW aren't one-hit wonders. In addition to "Oh Sheila", they had such hits as "Digital Display" and "Love You Down". Also, Prince didn't write "Oh Sheila". I think the rumor that Prince did write it got started because RFTW sounded like him. It was actually written by three of the band members. According to lead singer/co-writer Melvin Riley, the name Sheila was made up.
ReplyDeleteBecause I'm from Flint and attended the same school as some of them, RFTW takes me back. I remember seeing the lead singer perform solo at a talent show; the guitar player was in my Drafting class.
Malcolm - Melvin Riley did have a career in music after RFTW broke up. However, I think that the others are working regular jobs now.

re: Flint schools -- I wonder if any school still teaches 'drafting'? I remember taking that course back in the day and enjoying it very much. Nobody uses pencils anymore (sigh)...
Thanks for responding Villager. Although I've heard many definitions for one-hit wonder, this is the first time I've heard it with that criteria (having a #1 hit out of the gate ... and never following it up with another #1 hit). With that criteria, other artists such as Sheena Easton, Eurythmics, The Pet Shop Boys, and The Spice Girls would be considered "one-hit wonders"... even though they had several hits after their first smash went to #1. Maybe there should be a category called "one #1 hit wonders" or something... I'm just saying. :-)

Malcolm - re: drafting. I don't think that I've ever used that cool contact paper that we used to use back in drafting classes. Nor have I ever had to design my own home or anything useful. But, I do have fond memories of the class. I may need to write a post seeking 'drafting class alumni' (smile)...
