On this date in 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from prison. He was (then) a South African political activist and member of the African National Congress.

Still active, he had been in Robben Island prison in South Africa for 27 years.

    I remember that day. It was broadcast live. I saw it on CBS at the time. Seemed like it broke into CBS' Sunday Morning.

    Levois - It demonstrates the power of having a strong will. The power of Nelson Mandela's will gained a worldwide following and resulted in the end of apartheid. Truly a remarkable human being...
