Mychal Bell, Jena 6 Student, Shoots Himself

Mychal Bell was arrested for shoplifting on Christmas Eve. He was realeased on $1,300 bail. Today we learn that the troubled youngster shot himself in the shoulder.

Mychal Bell was cleaning a gun when it accidentally discharged, shooting him in the shoulder, his attorney, Carol Powell-Lexing, told CNN. He had surgery Monday night at a hospital in Monroe, Louisiana, and has not yet been able to talk, she said. CNN.com

I encourage visitors to read the post on What About Our Daughters for some very insightful comments and analysis of this latest incident by a Jena 6 student.

Urban Scientist - What did 'figero' say?

How embarrassing. Having the black community come to his rescue when it seems like he probably wasn't so innocent to begin with. People like this disgust me and keep the negative black stereotypes going. White people don't make these up, WE perpetuate them by doing EXACTLY what people expect of us. I hope with Obama in office black America can WAKE UP, but I doubt it.

Kevin - I don't see it as embarrassing. Our community came to the rescue against inhumane criminal justice system. Those six young people should never have been charged with attempted murder. That was the issue. The issue was never about the 6 kids themselves ... however, it is sad that the kids didn't learn the right lessons from the situation.

As I said over at Gina's:

"Kinda like Rodney King..."

SjP - Good comparison. Rodney King and Mychal Bell are also like the large number of lottery winners ... who find themselves bankrupt a few years after winning the lottery...

I don't think this takes anything away from the Jena 6. I agree with the perspective that the biggest issue was the injustice itself. The efforts to shed light on what happened in Jena were not in vain.

Esquire - It's a helluva way for the Bell family to start off the new year. I wonder how the other five boys from Jena 6 infamy are doing nowadays?
