Sotomayor Accuses Colleagues of Trying to ‘Wish Away’ Racial Inequality

Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s fierce defense of the affirmative action efforts such as the ones that helped move her from a Bronx housing project to the upper echelons of American law found renewed voice in an impassioned dissent that accused colleagues of trying to “wish away” racial inequality — and drew a tart response from Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr.

In her most personal moment in 41 /2 years on the court, Sotomayor read part of her dissent from the bench to emphasize her disagreement with six colleagues who upheld Michigan’s constitutional amendment banning the consideration of race in public university admissions.

It is a 58-page dissent, longer than the combined efforts of four other justices who wrote. The court’s first Latina justice directly took on Roberts’s view that the nation’s continued reliance on racial classifications hinders rather than promotes the goal of a color-blind society.

Pat Buchanan's War Against Sonia Sotomayor

One of our villagers recently commented about the virulent racism spewing from Pat Buchanan in the past week or so. We talked about Buchanan's racist streak last year. No doubt about it ... Buchanan is at it again as we listen to his never-ending race-baiting tirades against Judge Sonia Sotomayor:

I agree with Media Matters when they argue that MSNBC is making a mistake by having Pat Buchanan on the air to discuss any issue related to race. What say u?

Newt Gingrich: 'I Shouldn't Have Called Sonia Sotomayor a Racist'

The heat got to be too much for Newt Gingrich. He folded. He now admits that he was wrong to call Judge Sonia Sotomayor a racist. In a Human Events column, the former Republican House Leader wrote:

"My initial reaction was strong and direct -- perhaps too strong and too direct. The sentiment struck me as racist and I said so. Since then, some who want to have an open and honest consideration of Judge Sotomayor's fitness to serve on the nation's highest court have been critical of my word choice.

With these critics who want to have an honest conversation, I agree. The word "racist" should not have been applied to Judge Sotomayor as a person, even if her words themselves are unacceptable (a fact which both President Obama and his Press Secretary, Robert Gibbs, have since admitted)."
The remarkable thing is that Newt Gingrich aspires to be our next President. Can you imagine having a person with his lack of discipline in the White House?

Villagers, I encourage you to continue beating the drums against the voices of hate and extremism, who instead of looking at her judicial record have launched a vocal rampage that has reached new heights of absurdity.

Take action to put a stop to it.

Newt Gingrich apologized. However, former Congressman, failed presidential candidate, and anti-immigrant extremist Tom Tancredo, unable to provide a shred of evidence for his assertion that Judge Sotomayor is a "racist," went off the deep end on CNN, saying Sotomayor belongs to "the Latino KKK without the hoods and nooses."

Raising questions and concerns about Judge Sotomayor's 17-year record on the bench is legitimate. Resorting to outdated stereotypes, defamation of character, and outright falsehoods is not ... as Newt Gingrich learned.

Please join us and send a message to Chairman Michael Steele of the RNC, House Minority Leader John Boehner, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell asking them to denounce these statements and restore the nomination process for Judge Sotomayor to a more appropriate and civil discourse.

Republicans Continue to Attack 'Justice J-Lo'

Republicans continue to struggle with Obama's decision to nominate Sonia Sotomayor to serve on the Supreme Court. On the one hand, they claim that Sotomayor is a racist who is only being nominated because of her gender and ethnicity. On the other hand, right-wing Republicans continue to race-bait Sotomayor.

The latest to join the bandwagon is Debbie Schlussel, who called Sotomayer 'Sonia from the Block' and 'Justice J-Lo'. Schlussel feels that Obama chose Sotomayor for the "sole reason" that "she shares the life story of J-Lo, Jennifer Lopez."

Another right-wing kook, Pat Buchanan, continued his rampage against Sotomayor. He is now calling on the US Senate to "stand up for the white working class" and vote against Sotomayor.

Elections Have Consequences: Judge Sonia Sotomayor

This is another good day in America! Our new president announced yesterday that he is nominating Judge Sonia Sotomayor of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit to the Supreme Court.

Elections have consequences. Our president demonstrated this fact once again with this appointment.

Judge Sotomayor is a talented and fair-minded jurist and will be the first Hispanic Justice on the Supreme Court. Her record shows that she'll bring an open mind to the Court and rule on each case according to its particular merits.

I imagine that Michael Steele, Rush Limbaugh and Dick Cheney will object to Sotomayor's confirmation. It won't matter. America wants a qualified woman and a qualified Hispanic on the Supreme Court.

Obama can check off another campaign promise -- to select a person who has demonstrated an abiding commitment to the core constitutional values of justice and equality under the law, someone who understands the impact that the law has on the everyday lives of ordinary Americans.

Sonia Sotomayor's decades-long legal career is a powerful stepping stone to the high court.

  1. She graduated from Yale Law School where she was Editor of the Yale Law Journal and Managing Editor of the Yale Studies in World Public Order.

  2. She was Assistant District Attorney for New York County from 1979-1984.

  3. And she has served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit since 1998, before that serving on the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York since 1992.

This nomination is good news for people who care about the future of our rights and liberties. Her nomination is bad for GOP nutcases like Tom Tancredo and Rush Limbaugh.

Judge Sonia Sotomayor will be a justice that makes all villagers proud.

Elections have consequences. President Obama continues to play chess while his opponents are playing checkers. Hispanics, women and all of America are feeling good this week to be living in the Obama era!

Republicans Call Sonia Sotomayer a 'Racist' and a 'Bigot'

The Republican Party seems more and more like an irrelevant group of scared white folks. Listen to their immediate reaction to decision by President Obama to appoint Judge Sonia Sotomayer to the Supreme Court.

Is it just me ... or do these folks sound more and more desperate in their flailing to stay relevant?
