Taser Death: La'Reko Williams (Charlotte, NC)

Last week was a rough one for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD). They were deemed out of control by a federal jury who awarded the family of a taser-killing with a $10 million settlement. Then they went ahead and did it again. This time CMPD officer Michael Forbes pumped 50,000 volts of electricity into the frail body of 21-year old La'Reko Williams -- killing him.

According to CMPD officials, police were called to the CATS Lynx Blue Line station at Woodlawn around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday where a man was allegedly beating and choking a woman. When Officer Michael Forbes and several other officers arrived, they ordered the man -- Williams -- to stop and sit down.
"He gave several orders for the male to desist. As he approached the male, the male got up and started running," CMPD Police Chief Monroe said early Thursday morning. "Officer Forbes gave chase and during the chase, he deployed his Taser."
Williams was knocked unconscious by the taser death-rays and Medic arrived moments later to revive him. Attempts by Medic and doctors at Carolinas Medical Center to revive the man with CPR were unsuccessful.

Less than an hour later, Williams was dead.

The mother of Williams' 1-year-old child said she was not the woman he was allegedly beating Wednesday night, and said she has never known him to be physically violent. She said she was in disbelief that police claim he was hitting and choking another woman.  However, Williams has been arrested twice for assaulting a female and once for assaulting an officer, according to police records.

The police are very quick to share police records when they are trying to avoid troubling taser-related death inquiries. Anyhow, the killer-cop (Forbes) has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the death investigation. Forbes has been a member of CMPD since Sept. 24, 2007.

Just another murder for these racist cops. Wouldn't surprise me if he tased him a little longer than normal. However, us black folk got to stop giving caucasians reasons to put they hands on us!

"TASER Death Rays"??? Thats a little much, isn't it?

I sympathize with the family of the deceased, but not for the so-called victim. The deceased was a criminal felony suspect who, when given commands, repeatedly failed to obey; he fled the scene (also a felony); the officer used his Taser rather than shooting him with his pistol which might also have been justified; the Taser subdued the suspect, who from reasons as yet unknown, died.

This is bad all around, but nothing inappropriate. Fortunately, a man who had a history of perpetrating violence against women (whom I will bet were all black), won't be doing it again.

Kataurus - I agree that we shouldn't give anyone a reason to lay hands on us. Always better to stay on the right side of the law...

Gunfighter - I'm sometimes guilty of hyberbole ... one of the joys of owning my own blog! As for Mr. Williams' 'criminal record' for beating up women. My read is that he was arrested for those things. I don't see any mention that he was convicted of any such charge. The police often arrest people and later drop the charges, don't they?

None of you knew LaReko so none of you should speak on this situations. Everybody has arguments with the mother of their child which was noones business. Yes he has a record but he has mad bad choices in his life thatevery teen does but that does not make him a bad person. As for the previous assualt on women Reko was never known for beating on women yes he argues with them but he did not assualt them. When women get made they make up anything to get back at a man. So i would like for yall to stop saying rude comments abiut my friend becaus you know nothing about him. The cop still had no reason to tase him for 32 seconds theirs a 5 second rule so they where in the wrong. He did not flee the scene he so i wish everyone would stop taking up for the cops they where in the wrong and thats it.
R.I.P. LaReko Williams aka Reko
you are truly missed and never forgotten you will always be in my heart

Lady Gigglez - We are truly sorry for your loss. It's not a coincidence that the Charlotte Police Department suspended all use of taser guns after the taser-related killing of Mr. Williams. The police know that something is wrong. I give them credit for making the effort to study the situation and come up with an alternative solution.

In the meantime, I hope that the police who killed Mr. Williams are punished to full extent of the law.
