Happy Birthday: Langston Hughes (1902-1967)

Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, MO on this date in 1902. He began writing poetry while attending Central High School in Cleveland, OH. He was educated at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.

He was an influential figure in the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920's. Hughes spent time in Paris and after returning to the United States, he worked as a busboy in Washington, D.C. It was there in 1925, that his literary skills were discovered after he left three of his poems beside the plate of American poet Vachel Lindsay, who recognized Hughes's abilities and helped publicize his work.

Langston Hughes was active in social and political causes, using his poetry as a vehicle for cultural protest. He traveled to the Soviet Union, Haiti, and Japan, and he served as the Madrid correspondent for a Baltimore newspaper during the Spanish Civil War. Hughes wrote over 50 books and his drama Mulatto was performed 373 times on Broadway. Hughes also became known for the character Jesse B. Simple that he created in the 1940's for the Chicago Defender & New York Post. The humor and dialect of Jesse Simple disguised his common sense while depicting the everyday American experiences of Black citizens.

Langston Hughes died in 1967.

Let America be America Again
LANGSTON HUGHES 1938
Originally published in Esquire and in the International Worker Order pamphlet A New Song (1938)

Let America be America again. Let it be the dream it used to be. Let it be the pioneer on the plain Seeking a home where he himself is free.

(America never was America to me.)

Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed-- Let it be that great strong land of love Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme That any man be crushed by one above.

(It never was America to me.)

O, let my land be a land where Liberty Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath, But opportunity is real, and life is free, Equality is in the air we breathe.

(There's never been equality for me, Nor freedom in this "homeland of the free.")

Say, who are you that mumbles in the dark? And who are you that draws your veil across the stars?

I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart, I am the Negro bearing slavery's scars. I am the red man driven from the land, I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek-- And finding only the same old stupid plan Of dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak.

I am the young man, full of strength and hope, Tangled in that ancient endless chain Of profit, power, gain, of grab the land! Of grab the gold! Of grab the ways of satisfying need! Of work the men! Of take the pay! Of owning everything for one's own greed!

I am the farmer, bondsman to the soil. I am the worker sold to the machine. I am the Negro, servant to you all. I am the people, humble, hungry, mean-- Hungry yet today despite the dream. Beaten yet today--O, Pioneers! I am the man who never got ahead, The poorest worker bartered through the years.

Yet I'm the one who dreamt our basic dream In the Old World while still a serf of kings, Who dreamt a dream so strong, so brave, so true, That even yet its mighty daring sings In every brick and stone, in every furrow turned That's made America the land it has become. O, I'm the man who sailed those early seas In search of what I meant to be my home-- For I'm the one who left dark Ireland's shore, And Poland's plain, and England's grassy lea, And torn from Black Africa's strand I came To build a "homeland of the free."

The free?

Who said the free? Not me? Surely not me? The millions on relief today? The millions shot down when we strike? The millions who have nothing for our pay? For all the dreams we've dreamed And all the songs we've sung And all the hopes we've held And all the flags we've hung, The millions who have nothing for our pay-- Except the dream that's almost dead today.

O, let America be America again-- The land that never has been yet-- And yet must be--the land where every man is free. The land that's mine--the poor man's, Indian's, Negro's, ME-- Who made America, Whose sweat and blood, whose faith and pain, Whose hand at the foundry, whose plow in the rain, Must bring back our mighty dream again.

Sure, call me any ugly name you choose-- The steel of freedom does not stain. From those who live like leeches on the people's lives, We must take back our land again, America!

O, yes, I say it plain, America never was America to me, And yet I swear this oath-- America will be!

Out of the rack and ruin of our gangster death, The rape and rot of graft, and stealth, and lies, We, the people, must redeem The land, the mines, the plants, the rivers. The mountains and the endless plain-- All, all the stretch of these great green states-- And make America again!

Do you have any thoughts about Langston Hughes? What is your favorite literary work by Bro. Hughes?

Sunday Inspiration: Our Train Ride

At birth we boarded the train and met our parents, and we believe they will always travel on our side. However, at some station our parents will step down from the train, leaving us on this journey alone. As time goes by, other people will board the train; and they will be significant i.e. our siblings, friends, children, and even the love of our lives. Many will step down and leave a permanent vacuum. Others will go so unnoticed that we don't realize they vacated their seats. This train ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hellos, goodbyes, and farewells. Success consists of having a good relationship with all passengers requiring that we give the best of ourselves.

The mystery to everyone is: We do not know at which station we ourselves will step down. So, we must live in the best way, love, forgive, and offer the best of who we are. It is important to do this because when the time comes for us to step down and leave our seat empty we should leave behind beautiful memories for those who will continue to travel on the train of life.

I wish you a joyful journey on the train of life. Reap success and give lots of love. More importantly, thank God for the journey. Lastly, I thank you for being one of the passengers on my train.

Sunday Inspiration: 36 Ways to Make Your World Happier (Romans 8:31)

An Angel says, 'Never borrow from the future. If you worry about what may happen tomorrow and it doesn't happen, you have worried in vain. Even if it does happen, you have to worry twice.'
  1. Pray
  2. Allow extra time to do things and to get to places.
  3. Be kind to unkind people (they probably need it the most).
  4. Carry a spiritually enlightening book with you to read while waiting in line.
  5. Delegate tasks to capable others.
  6. Develop a forgiving attitude (most people are doing the best they can).
  7. Do something for the Kid in You everyday.
  8. Eat right.
  9. Every day, find time to be alone.
  10. Every night before bed, think of one thing you're grateful for that you've never been grateful for before.
  11. Get enough rest.
  12. Get organized so everything has its place.
  13. Get up on time so you can start the day unrushed.
  14. Go to bed on time.
  15. Have backups; an extra car key in your wallet, an extra house key buried in the garden, extra stamps, etc.
  16. Having problems? Talk to God on the spot. Try to nip small problems in the bud. Don't wait until it's time to go to bed to try and pray.
  17. Keep a folder of favorite scriptures on hand.
  18. K.M.S. (Keep Mouth Shut). This single piece of advice can prevent an enormous amount of trouble.
  19. Laugh.
  20. Laugh some more!
  21. Less is more. (Although one is often not enough, two are often too many.
  22. Listen to a tape while driving that can help improve your quality of life.
  23. Live within your budget; don't use credit cards for ordinary purchases.
  24. Make friends with Godly people.
  25. Pace yourself. Spread out big changes and difficult projects over time; don't lump the hard things all together.
  26. Remember that the shortest bridge between despair and hope is often a good 'Thank you GOD!'
  27. Remind yourself that you are not the general manager of the universe.
  28. Say No to projects that won't fit into your time schedule, or that will compromise your mental health.
  29. Separate worries from concerns. If a situation is a concern, find out what God would have you do and let go of the anxiety. If you can't do anything about a situation, forget it.
  30. Simplify and unclutter your life.
  31. Sit on your ego.
  32. Slow down.
  33. Take one day at a time.Write down thoughts and inspirations.
  34. Take your work seriously, but not yourself at all.
  35. Talk less; listen more.
  36. Write down thoughts and inspirations.
GOD HAS A WAY OF TURNING THINGS AROUND FOR YOU!
'If God is for us, who can be against us?'
(Romans 8:31)

Sunday Inspiration: And Then It Is Winter

You know. . . time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years.

It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams. But, here it is... the winter of my life and it catches me by surprise...How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go?

I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like. But, here it is...my friends are retired and getting grey...they move slower and I see an older person now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me...but, I see the great change....Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant...but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd be.

Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore... it's mandatory! Cause if I don't on my own free will... I just fall asleep where I sit!

And so...now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!

But, at least I know, that though the winter has come, and I'm not sure how long it will last...this I know, that when it's over on this earth...it's NOT over. A new adventure will begin!

Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done...things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done. It's all in a lifetime.

So, if you're not in your winter yet...let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly! Don't put things off too long!

Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life...so, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember...and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!

Sunday Inspiration: Time

If you had a bank that credited your account each morning with $86,400 - with no balance carried from day to day - what would you do? How would you spend your money?

Well, you do have such a bank ... time.

Every morning, time credits you with 86,400 seconds to use for whatever purpose you choose. Every night it rules off as “lost” whatever you have failed to use toward good purposes.

It carries over no balances and allows no overdrafts. You can’t hoard it, save it, store it, loan it, or invest it. You can only use it.
  1. Nobody can manage time. But you can manage those things that take up your time.
  2. Time is a priority. You have enough time for anything in the world, so long as it ranks high enough among your priorities.
  3. Time is expensive. As a matter of fact, 80 percent of our day is spent on those things or those people that only bring us two percent of our results.
  4. Time is irreplaceable. We never make back time once it is gone.
  5. Time is measurable. Everybody has the same amount of time…pauper or king. It is not how much time you have; it is how much you use.
  6. Time is perishable. It cannot be saved for later use.
I can’t control what life does to me but I can control how I react to what life does.”  ~ Lewis Timberlake ('First Thing Every Morning')

Sunday Inspiration: Thank You Lord

Dear GOD:

I want to thank YOU for what YOU have already done.

I am not going to wait until I see results or receive rewards; I am thanking YOU right now. I am not going to wait until I feel better or things look better; I am thanking YOU right now.  I am not going to wait until people say they are sorry or until they stop talking about me; I am thanking YOU right now.

I am not going to wait until the pain in my body disappears; I am thanking YOU right now.  I am not going to wait until my financial situation improves; I am going to thank YOU right now. I am not going to wait until the children are asleep and the house is quiet; I am going to thank YOU right now.

I am not going to wait until I get promoted at work or until I get the job; I am going to thank YOU right now.  I am not going to wait until I understand every experience in my life that has caused me pain or grief; I am thanking YOU right now.  I am not going to wait until the journey gets easier or the challenges are removed.  I am thanking YOU right now.

I am thanking YOU because I am alive. I am thanking YOU because I made it through the day's difficulties. I am thanking YOU because I have walked around the obstacles.  I am thanking YOU because I have the ability and the opportunity to do more and do better.

I'm thanking you because GOD, YOU haven't given up on me.

Pray First, Aim High and Stay Focused

There once was a man who had nothing for his family to eat. He had an old shotgun and three bullets. So, he decided that he would go out and kill something for dinner.

As he went down the road, he saw a rabbit and he shot at the rabbit and missed it. Then he saw a squirrel and fired a shot at the squirrel and missed it.

As he went further, he saw a wild turkey in the tree and he had only one bullet, but a voice came to him and said, "Pray first, aim high and stay focused."

However, at the same time, he saw a deer which was a better kill. He brought the gun down and aimed at the deer. But, then he saw a rattlesnake between his legs about to bite him. He naturally brought the gun down further to shoot the rattlesnake.

Still, the voice said again to him, "I said 'Pray, aim high and stay focused."

So, the man decided to listen to the voice. He prayed, then aimed the gun high up in the tree and shot the wild turkey.

The bullet bounced off the turkey and killed the deer. The handle fell off the gun and hit the snake in the head and killed it. And, when the gun had gone off, it knocked him into a pond.

When he stood to look around, he had fish in all his pockets, a dead deer and turkey to eat. The snake (Satan) was dead simply because the man listened to God.

Bottom line: Pray first before you do anything, aim and shoot high in your goals, and stay focused on God.

Sunday Inspirations: Eliminate the N-Word (VIDEO)

I've never been a hip-hop music fan. So, I guess I missed the transition to a time when the N-word became cool and fashionable. Heck, it is so cool nowadays that white female doctors feel free to say it loud and proud 11 times in a 5-minute rant on radio.

Personally, I've never thought of the N-word as a term of endearment. In my view, the word is a racial slur no matter who says it. I wouldn't use the word "Nazi" as a term of endearment for a Jewish person ... and my preference is that the other N-word not be used as a term of endearment for a Black person.

I've seen how the N-word can lead to ugly situations in our society. I think of lynchings whenever I hear the word. I don't see it as a friendly term that can be used by white folks or Black folks. In my view, whenever the N-word is used ... we are being disrespectful to our ancestors. My mother and father taught me better. My grandmothers and grandfathers taught them better. I pray that I'm teaching my three children better.

Villagers, it's time that we simply eliminate the N-Word entirely from our lexicon. It's not a word to use as a greeting ... or to complete sentences ... or to start conversations.

An 11-year old child, Johnathan McCoy, says it best in the following video clip:

I challenge all villagers to make a personal commitment to eliminate the N-word from their vocabulary. What say u?

What Does the Bible Say About the Death Penalty?

Troy Davis is in his jail cell down in Georgia. His execution is set to take place tonight. Only Troy and God know whether or not he murdered Mark MacPhail.

I began to wonder what the Bible says about the death penalty.

The first mention of the appropriate punishment for a murder is in Genesis 4:11-15.
"And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;...a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth. And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him." (KJV)
Adam and Eve's sons were Cain, a farmer, and Abel, a shepherd. Each brought the best that they had had produced as a sacrifice to God. God accepted Abel's sacrifice of meat but rejected Cain's grain offering. Cain's resultant disappointment turned to anger; he killed his brother. God cursed Cain for the murder and sent him to wander the earth. God also put a mark on Cain's body so that nobody who saw him would be motivated to kill him. If anyone killed Cain for the murder of his brother, that person would be very severely punished. Here, banishment and exile is the penalty for murder; capital punishment is specifically prohibited.

The first mention of capital punishment as a penalty for murder is in Genesis 9:6:
"Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man." (KJV)
This passage regards the killing of a human as an offense against God because humans were made in the image of God, both male and female. Unlike the previous passage which required that the murderer be merely exiled, this verse required the murderer to be killed.

I imagine that proponents on either side of the death penalty question can find comfort in the Bible.

Rethabile Masilo (see photo) reached inside of his soul and created this poem for Troy Davis:

THE MESSAGE
(for Troy Davis)

Over the outer wall
a sun will rise, lighting
the same things it lights
whether or not another war
has been sparked, or
a market dried up and dead,
the same sun that sometimes
appears to linger above
a plot of land on which
his mother grows beans,
collards, in soil smeared with
blood, cleared with toil.
It’ll be so early one might
mistake it for a hanging night
moon.

On white picket fence
at an unearthly hour
on the morning of this last day,
a cock crows to tell the dead man
it’s time to go, while, somewhere
in the country, a postman
slides letters into mailboxes
whose arms, too, hang loosely
at the sides. A dog runs after
his jeep to the end of the street,
slinks back home dragging its tail.

A day Jehovah won’t forget
that easily. A day nobody
is waiting for nor thinks should
materialise. A last day for a man
through whose skin, milling
with melanocytes, past whose
layers of vein and into
whose lumen a needle will
enter and leave its message.

Sunday Inspirations: Heaven Waits For Me (Chandra Currelley-Young)

Chandra Currelley
I guess I should start by saying that I'm not a big fan of Tyler Perry. I admire his entrepreneurial ability ... but, his movies often appear to be unnecessarily harsh against the image of African American men. I've never gone to a Tyler Perry play in my life and I've only attended his movies when others in my life suggested it. Earlier today my younger daughter suggested that the two of us go see Perry's current movie, 'Big Happy Family'.

I took her up on the offer.

The movie had scenes that were funny and other scenes that were tragic and brought a tear to your eye. I can't say that I would recommend the movie to others.

However, the most memorable moment of the film to me was Chandra Currelley-Young. She sang the following song towards the end of the movie and it blew me away.

It is Mother's Day today. I thought of my mother as this song was being played. Anyhow, the song inspired me today. I hope you enjoyed it as well.

Sunday Inspirations: Keep the Faith

I'm no different than most villagers. I rise and grind each day with hopes that my children will follow the right paths and examples that I've set and overlook or forgive the mistakes and missteps that I've made in my life.
Scripture tells me, "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." – Hebrews 11:1
Sometimes, the path is not so clear. It is at those times that He places a thought in my mind that moves me forward. Today that thought came in the form of a song shared by a friend. I hadn't heard this song before today ... but, it was right on time.

For others who may have missed this one ... it was initially recorded by Michael Jackson in 1991 on his Dangerous album.

Soulclap to Black and Married With Kids for pointing us to this uplifting video with married couples at the church Barack Obama and his family attended for many years. Sunday Inspirations: Philura Williams

I grew up as a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles CA. My mom sang in the choir. My brother played the piano for the youth choir for many years. However, my lasting memory of music at Westminster revolved around one woman -- Philura Williams.

Her voice would soar into the balcony where I used to sit with the other young people of the church. I only knew Mrs. Williams from church. Her husband was an educator and her daughter was pretty cool. However, my lasting memory of Westminster's choir was the voice of Philura Williams.

She sang at my father's funeral. I've never heard a singing voice in person that is more beautiful over the full course of my half-century of living.

I encourage villagers of all ages, genders and creeds to close your eyes and enjoy the stylings of Philura Williams.

Mrs. Williams is a classically trained soprano.  She recently released a CD of 6 of her original songs and 3 popular hymns that she is often asked to sing.

You can check out her CD online or you can email her. Some of the proceeds from her CD sales go to I CAN FLY INTERNATIONAL which is a charity to meet needs of African girls.

Sunday Inspiration: The Million Man Poem (Maya Angelou)

I'm still having good memories from my participation in the Million Man MarchOne of the MMM highlights was a poem read by Maya Angelou. It went something like this:

Million Man March Poem - By Maya Angelou
The night has been long,
The wound has been deep,
The pit has been dark,
And the walls have been steep.

Under a dead blue sky on a distant beach,
I was dragged by my braids just beyond your reach.
Your hands were tied, your mouth was bound,
You couldn't even call out my name.
You were helpless and so was I,
But unfortunately throughout history
You've worn a badge of shame.

I say, the night has been long,
The wound has been deep,
The pit has been dark
And the walls have been steep.

But today, voices of old spirit sound
Speak to us in words profound,
Across the years, across the centuries,
Across the oceans, and across the seas.
They say, draw near to one another,
Save your race.
You have been paid for in a distant place,
The old ones remind us that slavery's chains
Have paid for our freedom again and again.

The night has been long,
The pit has been deep,
The night has been dark,
And the walls have been steep.

The hells we have lived through and live through still,
Have sharpened our senses and toughened our will.
The night has been long.
This morning I look through your anguish
Right down to your soul.
I know that with each other we can make ourselves whole.
I look through the posture and past your disguise,
And see your love for family in your big brown eyes.

I say, clap hands and let's come together in this meeting ground,
I say, clap hands and let's deal with each other with love,
I say, clap hands and let us get from the low road of indifference,
Clap hands, let us come together and reveal our hearts,
Let us come together and revise our spirits,
Let us come together and cleanse our souls,
Clap hands, let's leave the preening
And stop impostering our own history.
Clap hands, call the spirits back from the ledge,
Clap hands, let us invite joy into our conversation,
Courtesy into our bedrooms,
Gentleness into our kitchen,
Care into our nursery.

The ancestors remind us, despite the history of pain
We are a going-on people who will rise again.

And still we rise.

What is your favorite memory of Maya Angelou? or the Million Man March?

Sunday Inspiration: The Million Man March Pledge

Do you remember the Million Man March?  There were a number of powerful aspects to that day in October 1995.   One of the memorable moments came when Min. Farrakhan led all of us in a pledge.

Sunday Inspiration: Deonte Bridges' Valedictorian speech

I was nudged twice in the past week by people that I respect. Each of them introduced me to Deonte Bridges. I had never heard of the young man before this week. However, any youngster that can earn over $1 million in scholarships for his college education is worthy of attention.

I invite all villagers to listen to his four-minute Valedictorian speech before fellow graduates, faculty, staff and parents at Booker T. Washington High School's graduation ceremony on May 28, 2010, at the Atlanta Civic Center.

What are your thoughts after listening to this young man?

Sunday Inspiration: The Law of the Garbage Truck

Drumbeats from Iya brought this uplifting story to me via email. I thought that villagers would enjoy it as well...

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean he was really friendly.

So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital! This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.' he explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you.

Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets. The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day.

Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so... Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don't. Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!

Have a blessed, garbage-free day!
