I just discovered Gil a few months ago. He's a beast.
I was 14 years old and I saw him
perform "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised " and "Winter in America" at Odunde in Philadelphia.
Years Later, I saw him again in Washington D.C. at Howard University. I think I was 23..
It's been hard for him over the years..I surely hope he defeats his demons.
Oh, so this is the guy who did "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised". I've never heard it but I've always heard about it. Gonna have to check it out. Would he be considered the original spoken word artist?
Hotep Villager,
GSH has been a long term musical love of mine. I have never had the opportunity to see him in concert, but I still continue to listen to his music.
When you have the opportunity come over to my blog and check out my post for his birthday and for Marvin Gaye's birthday.
Homeland Colors - No doubt. GSH has skillz that often went unnoticed by larger audiences.
Keith - The Revolution Will Not Be Televised ... it will not be broadcast on NBC ... That is probably his best-known work...
Martin - I encourage you to check him out! Click on the links in my post to see some of his other videos. I suspect that he definitely would be considered a spoken word artist...
Lady D - I will be by shortly!
thanks my folk
DAMN! this is HOT! we used to throw on "The Revolution Will Not be Televised" in the dorm room, light up one of those "left-handed" cigarettes... and let the troubles of the day drift away! thanks for sharing... that was beautiful!
RawDawg - Just callin' out some love for giants in our community. GSH sometimes is neglected when we talk about powerful icons in the music industry...
Plez - Glad we could bring back some of those lost weekend memories for ya! btw, congrats on making the move to Twitter...
