Old School Friday: What's Going On

I was not able to locate an appropriate 1971 song, however, in light of today's 40th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King it seemed appropriate to kick back with Marvin Gaye for a moment. This is a rarely heard live version of 'What's Goin' On song taken from a 1973 documentary. Some of the images in this video bring back remarkable memories for me. How about you?

I missed the theme for this week...oh well....

"What's Going On" is so relevant for what's happening right now.

Great pick!!

I love this song!

You convinced me to join the Old School Friday meme. I just couldn't contain myself to one video and have posted a plethoria of work by the great Nina Simone.

Hope you are feeling better. Relax and drink plenty of water and herbal tea. Lay off milk, it increases phlegm. Follow the BRAT diet, Bananas, Rice, Apples, and Toast. Get yourself well, my dear friend.

In light and love

Hey Villager!
Awesome pick! I watched this video on Wednesday when I was trying to decide what I would post for OSF. Then I figured that either you, Marva, or Ms G. would post some Marvin! (I am not a betting woman, but I could have made some money on this one!!). I love Marvin, so talented and on point, and ahead of his time.
Looking at that video it could have been any urban city (NY, Philly, Chicago, etc). The sad thing is that aside from the fashions it could have been 1970 or 2007, a lot of our urban cities still look like that...

Peace & Love

Cassandra - I think that the theme for the week is going to make it more difficult for me as I never know what year my OSF music comes from. However, I'm glad that you enjoyed my pick today.

Danielle - I feel like shyt today. My eyes close and next thing I know it is 3 hours later (sigh). I'll be by to see your OSF entry shortly.

Regina - I was a youngster back then ...14-15 years old ... and I had a large afro and much of the same clothing that is shown in the video...

I love all of Marvin's music, especially his political tunes.

Villager,

Now I'm new to this whole music meme thing, so i think I've signed up for Old School Friday Music Meme 1(Mrs. Grapevine) and 2(here)! I still haven't figured out how to get the meme widget to appear, but I've posted a couple of pre-1993 favorites at my site.

Great choice with Marvin Gaye.

This had your name all over it, Villager...

I knew something was up when I came over and there was nothing new over here...I hope you feel better soon...

I picked the same song. At least I know you have good taste. We chose Betty Wright the same week, and now we both chose What's Going On? I will have to check your site before I post because we think too much alike on this music issue.

There's a meme widget? Where is it. How does it work?

I still haven't figured out memes so hey, just check out my Music category on MartyBLOGs and trip down memory lane at your leisure.

Can't go wrong with Marvin G.

Hope you're feeling better Wayne.

Martin - Anyone can join the meme! Just post an old school video (defined as pre-1993 vintage). You can use the meme widget if you want although not every participant uses it.

peace, Villager

Mrs. Grapevine - It is purely coincidence ... however, it is good for you that Mr. Grapevine is out there ... otherwise I might think that you missed out on your true soulmate (smile)! Anyhow, I thought Marvin Gaye was the right song for the anniversary of MLK's assassination...

Ms. Marvalus - I was down for the count over the past week or so. I'm just now starting to feel a little better. The good thing about having flu-like symptoms is that it gives you a chance to drop a few pounds ... so I guess my diet is officially on now (smile)...

Marcus - Oddly enough I went to high school with Marvin Gaye's niece. In fact, the house that Marvin died in (from being shot by his Dad) was only a couple of miles from where we lived. Those things gave Marvin Gaye more of an impact in my mind. However, I agree ... the message in this song is strong...

I'm going to head over to visit your entry for OSF this week...
