Old School Friday: Eddie Murphy

I invite you to enjoy some 'grown-folks music'! Ms Grapevine and MarvalusOne have teamed up to create a weekly meme that we call, Old School Friday. It is our effort to post some music from the last millennium to relive some memories and to educate or just entertain each other.

The theme this week is 'Actor-Turned-Singer' or 'Singer-Turned-Actor'. There were actually a lot of good options. I'm old enough to remember that Janet Jackson was Penny on 'Good Times' before she brought us 'Rhythm Nation'. I remember Mos Def at age 14, in the TV movie 'God Bless the Child'. I also enjoyed him in The Cosby Mysteries, before he started his rap career. Other talented people that came to mind were Ice T, Queen Latifah and Will Smith.

However, my mind immediately went to Eddie Murphy. Eddie was a successful comic and movie star when he decided to try out his musical chops with Rick James. Did you 'Party All The Time' back in the day?

I sure did "party all the time," well at least I sang and dance to the song.

I actually liked this song back in the day.

I did not party all the time because I was too busy staring at the TV thinking, "Why is he singing?" I never got into Eddie's music.

I really liked that song! LOL But most times people mention it its because they are picking on Eddie. Awww

Hey Villager, Ms Marvalus (The Marvalus View) and I (Essential Presence) have started "Good News Tuesday" where the meme is about good news in the Black community.

Not playing yet, but love the idea of this meme. First thought was Diana Ross for being a major talent both as a singer and as an actress.

I'm not really a fan of Eddie's singing, but he has been very successful as a comedic talent and actor. I did not know about Mos Def's early history. Thanks for the info!

I am not a fan but I remember when it came out! Everybody was just blinking their eyes and staring! Like, WHAT!!!

Good choices Villager! Although I got to say I think Eddie stretched a bit too far with his musical debut. Acting and comedy is his thing. Singing? Well...

I too almost pick this song, but I couldn't decide if it was a good thing or a bad thing. Eddie Murphy and Rick James, that's some combination.

Yeah, I made the sidelines, under village voices. I need to change my picture.

This just put the best smile on my face...I did not remember singing Eddie. As for his talent tho, I must admit that I probably spend more time laughing while he's singing or thinking its part of some skit before I remember he did have a fair shot at this.

*humming* My girl wants to party all the time...party all the time*

Hey Villager,

If you are old enough to know that Janet used to be Penny then you are probably over 40!! *LOL*

Now...if you are old enough to remember watching Cory on that t.v. show were Diahann Carroll starred in...then you are well over 45! *LOL*

Now...if you are old enough to remember watching The Munsters afterschool... you are probably over 50! *LOL*

If you owned an 8-track player in your college years..well...

*chuckles*

Like so many others commenting here, I almost went with Eddie too. Instead, I went with Ms Ross.

Great Pick!

Symphony - Remarkable that you told me about Good News Tuesday almost a year ago. Sorry it took so long for me to get onboard with it! I missed my entry this week ... but, I've already scheduled/posted my entry for next Tuesday!
