George McGovern Tells Clinton to Drop Out

Team Clinton experienced another defection to Barack Obama today. Former Sen. George McGovern, an early supporter of Hillary Rodham Clinton, urged her to drop out of the Democratic presidential race and endorsed her rival. [SOURCE]

After watching the returns from the North Carolina and Indiana primaries Tuesday night, McGovern said Wednesday it's virtually impossible for Clinton to win the nomination. The 1972 Democratic presidential nominee said he had a call in to former President Clinton to tell him of the decision, adding that he remains close friends with the Clintons.

McGovern's announcement comes a day before Clinton was scheduled to travel to South Dakota to campaign. The state holds its primary June 3 with 15 pledged delegates at stake.

He had kind words to say about Hillary Clinton, however, McGovern acknowledged that Obama has won the nomination "by any practical test".

It's time to unite the Democratic Party, he said.

McGovern concluded, "Hillary, of course, will make the decision as to if and when she ends her campaign. But I hope that she reaches that decision soon so that we can concentrate on a unified party capable of winning the White House next November."

I suspect that there will be more "encouragements" during the next couple of weeks. But since she's loaned her campaign another big chunk of money - she'll probably try to stick it out. Oh well...SjP

The rude awakening for HRC has come, unfortunately she continues to ignore it and is more willing to go out of the race with a boot behind her as opposed to grace.

But then we are talking about HRC, that's her style.

Sojourner - I imagine that she is only listening to counsel from Bill Clinton. They appear to be on their own planet and totally out of touch with what is happening in our world...

Shelia - She had false hopes based on Obama missteps, not based on any great love for her lying a$$. Did you see where she had to loan her campaign another six million last month?

Yes! And what I found particularly odd about that, is that she said on the night that she won Pennsylvania, she raked in $10,000,000 that night! What did they do with that money, stop at KFC?

Usually a campaign is over when the money dries up. The electorate has already shown Hillary that she is not the chosen one -- since she has had to put > 11 million of her own money into her own campaign so far.

@shelia, 10 million is a drop in the bucket in terms of television advertising over a wide area.

I know SheCodes, I'm being fecitious.

My actual point is, I don't believe that they raised $10,000,000 at all on that night. That was her story, there's been no proof of it.

While $10,000,000 is indeed a drop in the bucket, it will buy you something. Very interesting that she's just revealing the fact that last month she continued to pump her own money into her campaign.

I don't think that she's listening to Bill...Bill may be some things, but he ain't stupid...this is her and her not willing to lose something she believes she is entitled to...have you really watched Bill closely? Did you see him last night during her speech? I honestly think Bill would love the opportunity to campaign for Barack...if not for her...

I don't think this is his counsel at all...

And another thing...Bill is a Democrat, tried, true and blue...

I bet it is killing him to watch this crap...but it's his wife...what's he to do?

OK, I'm done now...tee hee hee...

Shelia - I recall being amazed that she raised $10 million in the 24-hour period after the Pennsylvania primary. Now it appears that $6.4 million of it was from her own dayum checking account. She will do and say anything to get elected...

SheCodes - It appears that Hillary Clinton simply doesn't understand the concept of a 'graceful exit'...

Marvalus - You have much more confidence in Bill than I do based on his performance in the past few months...
