Barack Obama Gains Momentum in Iowa

I was pleased to see the recent Newsweek Poll showing Barack Obama in the lead with likely Iowa caucus voters.

Newsweek asked, "If you were attending a Democratic caucus TODAY, which ONE of the following eight presidential candidates are you most likely to support?"

The poll results for the top three candidates were:
  1. Barack Obama (28%)
  2. Hillary Clinton (24%)
  3. John Edwards (22%)
The inevitability of a Hillary Clinton nomination is blown away when Obama wins the Iowa primary in January 2008. Anyhow, this was the first time that I've seen Obama leading in any poll.

I wonder if the people talking to the pollsters will follow their convictions and pull the voting lever for a Black man?

YES! I'm not saying which party or candidate I'm voting for because truthfully I'm clueless. We're having a little dialogue at MM under Faith and Politics and Obama. Feel free to leave a comment on your view. Oh, and please address my question that seemed to fall by the way side.

Rosemarie - You'll have to point me to the question that you feel I overlooked.

You have plenty of time to get a clue (smile). Hard to beleive that the elections are still over a year away.

Hey Villager.

What people seem to be forgetting when falling for Hillary's "inevitability" is that this is still very early in the process. What is disturbing is that if the media continues to push this spin, and somebody doesn't provide a counter-spin, then the myth could become reality.

Not that I think Hillary would be horrible, or that I think Obama is the saviour. But for now Obama more closely represents what I want, and not just because he's a brother. Alan Keyes is a brother too.

BTW, if anybody gets the chance, Carl Bernstein's recently-released bok about Hillary called "A Woman in Charge" is extremely insightful and gives a good look at what has shaped this woman.

Keith - I keep reminding myself that Howard Dean was leading everyone until Iowa ... where he lost at the polls and then lost afterwards with his weird yell. Bill Clinton never even campaigned in Iowa. However, it always comes down to one fact ... Obama must win Iowa to make it all work out.

Villager, do you mind if I use your Obama post on my blog? Of course I will give the appropriate attribution... Where did you get this info?

Iya - I see that Obama reported remarkable campaign donations for this past quarter. His support is strong. Can we turn it into a victory at the polls. That is the question. I found it amusing that news stories are now being run on whether or not Hillary "peaked" too soon.

I don't care if Obama or Edwards wins in Iowa, as long as it's not Hilary. Maybe one of them will drop out and back the other before the primaries; thereby toppling Hilary.

Yobachi - I feel ya'! Edwards winning may not get the desired result ... as Edwards doesn't have the money or organization to leverage a win in Iowa to success in New Hampshire. Obama can leverage Iowa win into a surprise win in NH ... and perhaps run the table when the primaries go down south (more Black voters).

Villager,

That's the big question, is whether folks will get right up to the finish line and then duck.

And did you hear that Hillary is now starting to pull away with fund-raising? Just came out in today's (Tues., Oct. 2) NYT.

I don't know, man. I don't know. I still think that when it gets down to it? History is a possessive MF that hates to be left in the cold...

Keith - Hilary had more in the 3rd quarter ... but, Obama still had twice as much as the republicans or the other dems. I've made decision to support him. It should be an interesting few months until the Iowa primary.

Obama was more strident in his criticism of Hilary and others that voted for the war in Iraq.

Word about down south.

Actually if he can just win one of the first two going into highly black-democratic south carolina; he can probably take it. But actually the same for Edwards since he's from both the Carolinas.
