Buy Black Update: Ebony Experiment

Earlier this year we asked villagers whether or not they could 'Buy Black' for a year. John and Maggie Anderson, a couple in Illinois, made a public pledge to exclusively support Black businesses and professionals and buy Black-made products for all of 2009. They hope to inspire a national dialogue about the plight and the potential of Black business.

What are your thoughts on the Ebony Experiment? Are you able to support Black-owned business in your city?

Yeah, I read about this couple yesterday on a link from a facebook friend. I'm glad you're featuring them. There is no Black business infrastructure where I live but I support the handful that I'm aware of.

Martin - One of the things that each of us needs to do is be very persistent in seeking out 'Buy Black' opportunities. What product or service did you struggle to find in your residential area?

I really do believe that this is a great idea. For those who like me who live in a small town with a small black population remember that you can also access black businesses on line. I try to buy black on the internet. Know where your money is going and what it is supporting. It is clear the government is not going to help us and therefore we need to help ourselves.
This idea can also be expanded to doing small things like supporting black blogs. Read them, link to them, and promote them. Black and Proud!

Renee - Often, I hear people making excuses on why they cannot support a self-help economic policy like 'Buy Black'. I appreciate that you raise your village voice to share a solution ... such as supporting Black blogs! Well done. I've added a sidebar link to CushCity books. It is a Black-owned online bookstore with an affiliate program. I encourage you to check it out if you have time or inclination...
